Also, the bug report was the "hang", not the inability to change perms (that was background info)... Sorry about my thinking the HD was clicking -- on a laptop, it's hard to differentiate between the HD and the floppy when there is no LED on the floppy and the HD access LED on the keyboard comes on when this hang occurs. So I issued "lsattr /mnt" and the command hung -- unable to kill with Ctrl+c. Attached strace to process and it too could not be killed. Had to issue "kill -9 PID" to kill it. It was obvious something was wrong as soon as I issued the lsattr command... it sounded like my HD heads were being parked/landed continuously -- about once per second... (ext3 filesystem)
