Most likely this has been reported already, but just in case: when shutting down (in graphical/framebuffer mode) the message is "shutting down... press escape for verbose mode".
However, the progress bar never completes, and there is no information when the system is ready to be powered down (the message doesn't change) -- unless you do press escape for verbose mode.
