description:
I have a new Micron Transport X1000 notebook, whose sound card is an M5451 PCI
South Bridge Audio. When I enable sound under GNOME, it seems that every
attempt to use sound for a system event sends the first few "notes" of the sound
to the card repeatedly in a loop. The loop lasts for a variable amount of time,
and I have no idea what eventually terminates it. Sometimes it doesn't
terminate. While this is happening, GNOME slows to a crawl.

The soundcard troubleshooting gives two drivers for the card: ALSA snd-ali5451
and OSS trident. The problem occurs with either driver, except that the sound
quality is infinitely better under GNOME with the trident driver.

Under KDE, there is no sound with the ALSA driver, and normal sound with the
trident driver. Also, under Win2000/XP, sound functions normally.

So, it seems that GNOME has a problem with the card itself.
