the default levels should not be 0 on first boot since7.06-27mdk.
what initscripts do you have ? is this an rc2 or a cooker install from september?
could you use alsamixergui or gnome-alsamixer to fix your mixer problem ?
as for sfxloader, awesfx is part of system package but its install priority is very
low at
install time.
warly could you install it if some piece of hardware has emu10k1 as driver ?

9.2 RC 2:
While booting I get this message:
alsactl: alsactl: set_control:966: Cannot write control '3:0:0:EFX voices
mask:0' : Invalid argument
I get no sound at all, not even after changing the kmix mixer by hand (the
mixer has default volume settigns at 0). In 9.1 I got sound by running aumix
(oss mixer tool) after kmix, but that seems gone in 9.2
The midi setup tool sfxload is missing while I selected multimedia workstation
in the install procedure (and thus the wavetable isn't initialized)
I hope this can be fixed in time, seems emu10k1 support in 9.2 is going to be
as crappy as the support in 9.1 :(
