I used the program 'serel' from http://www.fastboot.org for a while during the 9.1 -> 9.2 cooker phase, and had no problems with it. Bootup was faster. The program has not been updated in a while, but seems to be fairly complete as it stands. I had to manually add a few service dependancies (like harddrake and dm), as it is currently tuned for redhat systems. Possibly somebody could try packaging it for cooker, as it does seem to be a useful piece of software.
