my fault :-( you can have things working again by setting: PERL5LIB=/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.1:/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.1/i386-linux-thread-multi (of course adapt to your arch if you're not on i386) rebuilding a new perl fixing this broken backward compatibility pb. sorry for the trouble
