Is the problem where desktop icons in Gnome are screwed up fixed in the
cooker version? I.E. you can't change the icon to a different pixmap and
some default icons don't work (ex. MDKsupport icon)

No. 7.1 can be downloaded from the mirrors.
Cooker is dynamic bleeding edge stuff with no usability assumption.
It will however eventually become Mandrake 7.2, after which event it
will continue evolving to become 7.3, 8.0, etc.
