I don't have this problem on my system. All netscape files are in /usr/lib
(use the rpms of netscape). I think this is all configurable with the src
rpm of netscape (hint: by setting prefix).

Probably this is fixed with the cooker kernel ? Have you tried that one ?

This highly depends on the sound driver you are using. If this is alsa,
the settings should be saved on shutdown. You can also execute this
script by hand as root (/etc/rc.d/init.d/alsa stop, but this won't work
if you have tools running using the driver). Then you can check /etc/asound
if all was correctly saved. Also also has its own mixer, if the one from
kde does not work well with it (I use gnome, so I don't know that, but the
gnome mixer also does not behave very well concerning the saving of settings).

Are they available anywhere as rpm ?

Well I don't need this low resolutions so make it optional with one of
those drak tools which configure X. XF86Setup: Maybe you are using it
with XFree 4.0 ? I remember reading about problems with that. Try to
use a newer version of XFree4 then.

No, don't to this (at least not generally). Suppose you have a SCSI CDROM...
You can add such things to /etc/rc.local as a quick fix.

This is from glibc-devel, and it is a Devel package after all.
So if you're not developing on it, remove gcc and glibc-devel.
Of course for big packages like glibc a glibc-static package might
be not that bad idea.

Agreed, though I have no problems with that :-). Also consider adding
basic support for digital tv card (aka DVB, www.linuxtv.org). I have an
rpm spec for the dvb driver in case you're interested.

I have read about that one. Don't know much about sane though at the moment.
I think you should ask the automatic detection question to those people
there.

I think I saw severel packages for that in mandrake cooker.

Also in mandrake cooker already...

No, don't use this. It is a bad hack. See the linux kernel mailing list why.

Many of them are not GPLish, i.e. no source code available. So if they
are included, they should only on an extra commercial cd (my suggestion).

Isn't one include with gnome/kde ?

That would be nice indeed, but I think the locales itself do not take that
much disk space as for every package to include tons of extra language
rpms. As the rpm system is package and not language oriented I see no
easy way to accomplish this. Anyone ?

Generally not a bad idea (for gnome/kde) but has the big disadvantage
that you have a very bis /etc/ld.so.config file and probably ldconfig
may slow down. Also Mandrake should not go it's own way here, this is
something for the linux standard base. Similar is the problem with
the bin directories containing too many program. /opt/gnome and
/opt/kde directory (and similar) might be an option but I don't know
if its the best one. Maybe /opt/sound, /opt/graphics, /opt/desktop
is better (or /usr/sound/bin etc.). Up to the standard base to diskuss.

Are you saying stripped down binaries ? This is already done with the
current rpm version, no one still includes debugging code (OTOH this
makes it harder for debugging, as you always need to create an
debug executable).
