Don't know about back then, but nowadays you only quote as much as needed
(ie. NO FULL QUOTES!), and put your quotes AFTER the text you quoted.
Actually I have a hard time believing that it was ever different, since back
then bandwidth was even more expensive than it is today!

PS: Also do not post in HTML, it adds nothing and only makes the mails
larger.
