Just a caution on the default partitions installed by the 7.1 CDs: the
default partitions a 18Gb disk into a small root, a larger /usr and
the rest as a home partition, but this forgets a crucial large
directory, /var, which will rapidly outgrow the assigned / partition.

Filesystem 1k-blocks
/dev/hda5 295564
/dev/hda6 3020140
/dev/hda7 13100844

/var is home to mail spools, but also to fax and voicemail spools
which can get very large, and all the database programs on the Mandrake
CD put their databases here.

I also notice that the allotted /usr partition of 3GB will almost
burst if you elect to install everything included by default for a
development workstation; it doesn't leave much room for growth.

Now, I know how to work around this, and while I suppose I could have
re-done the partition table to just /boot and / as I normally do, I
gave the defaults a shot and now I am stuck with them. What concerns
me is whether this scheme, which requires advanced tweaking and
delicate symlinks, is the right one for the novice first-time user.
