That figures, it's not there:
NETWORKING=yes
FORWARD_IPV4=false
HOSTNAME=stefan

I use autofs, which (normally) doesn't require client side configuration
(once NIS works).

I'm not looking for a solution "for my box only", I beleive that this
stuff should work out-of-the-box, on every box (like it always did).
Anyway, this will require some initscript hacking... "Tan-man" Chmouel
seems to be quite fluent with this (judgeing by the number of changes to
the initscripts package lately) ;-) Chmouel, could you take a look at
this?
