Hello, I've been trying to look into why startx -- :1 gets refused by the server. Ok, here goes ! I am using XFree86 4.0.1-7mdk On tty1 - startx On tty2 - startx -- :1 Result: X on tty2 starts, but nothing loads up. On exit from X there is a screen full of connection to ":0.0" refused by server messages. Start at run level 3. On tty1 - init 5, login to KDE. On tty2 - init 5. Result: The run level starts to change. At the point where X should start you suddenly find yourself on tty1, with the message "switching to run level 3" followed by all the run level 5 services shutting down. <CTRL><ALT><F2> to get back to tty2 and it's sitting there at a command prompt. On tty1 - startx with KDE, allow to start up. On tty2 - startx with icewm, KDE etc. Result: X drops out with the message 'there is already a window manager running' !!! On tty1 - startx with KDE, allow to start up. On tty2 - startx with enlightenment. Result: X appears to hang, but in fact can be dropped out of with <CTRL><ALT><BS>. Press <CTRL><ALT><F7> to get back to KDE. Result: KDE has now hung, with a light gray background. There in the foreground is a dialog from enlightenment, you know the one started on tty2 !, stating that there has been an configuration error and offering to 'fix it'. However it can't 'cos it's locked solid as well. X can be dropped out of with <CTRL><ALT><BS>. I think XFree86 4 is a bit confused !!! Hope this lot helps, Owen
