Hi,
I've encountered some sort of odd memory loss problem, and was wondering whether
anyone on the Cooker list can help me diagnose it. I'm running Mandrake 7.1 but with
most of my key RPMS (XFree86-4.0.1, KDE-1.93, etc.) upgraded to the current cooker.
In testing KDE-2 I noticed that it was using vast quantities of memory:
KDE-2 + Konsole + Top:
RAM: 48876 K used 13916 K free
Swap: 25664 K used 72580 K free
This is obviously ridiculous, so I thought I'd try another window manager to see
whether it was a KDE problem. The following was my result:
Enlightenment-0.16 + Eterm + Top
RAM: 61144 K used 1648 K free
Swap: 3104 K used 95140 K free
So RAM + Swap = ~10 MB less than KDE-2, which is pretty much what I expected should
happen. So I chose to look closer at the output of top (attached). So where's the
memory going? My interpretation of the Top output is that I shouldn't be using any
more than about 45 MB, which seems a bit steep to me.
Naturally on a 64 MB machine I want to cut this down. Does anyone have any
suggestions?
