I think two small programs might be your enemy:
/usr/sbin/fndSession and /usr/sbin/chksession. They change at least for me
the sessions in Gnome. I had permission problems which I could solve by
examining these scripts. In your case you might try to update the corresponding
package:

mandrake_desk-1.0.4-1mdk

(hint of the day: rpm -qf `which fndSession` :-)
