Not only for pcmcia or laptop but for modem in general , here (Italy or at 
university as we have pabx, with factory modem configuration is impossible to 
dial because frequency of telephon signal is different from modem factory 
default, and modem wait indefinitely because don't recognize : result NO DIAL.
With ATX3 : modem sent dial string without wait signal. (use configurable 
timeout...)
And for callback is sufficient a thing like Kppp (easy sequence send and 
wait....) to configure initial string for modem with at commands.....sent 
user....password ....hangup.....wait RING...... ATA..... and I don't spend 
too much money....;o)
