This is for a fresh Expert-Development install I did from a rsynch of
rsync://rsync.proxad.net/mandrake-devel two hours ago and hd.img from
ftp://sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake-devel/ dated Saturday,
September 02, 2000 9:08:00 PM.
1. Modem vs. Network Card Configuration
In the 'configureNetwork' section of Install, first I configured my external
modem. I clicked 'OK', then the install went to the 'installCrypto'
section. I thought I used to get the option to setup a network card, in
addition to a modem?
2. XFree86 4.0.1 and Voodoo3
Tried installing XFree86 4.0.1 only and not 3.3.6 with my Voodoo3 2000 PCI
Video Card. When install asked if I wanted 3D acceleration support, I said
"yes". When I was ready to save the configuration I got a popup window
error, the debug.log version of which is:
'the graphic card does not like X in framebuffer
warning: Can't call method "pkgs_install" on unblessed reference at
/usr/bin/perl-install/Xconfigurator.pm line 1123'
The Xconfigurator came around again - which I think is a nice way to recover
from this - and asked again if I wanted to configure 3.3.6 in addition to
4.0.1. This time I said "yes"; said "no" to 3D acceleration support; and
the Xconfigurator finished this time.
3. Module Dependencies
After rebooting, /var/log/messages/ reports:
localhost insmod: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than
/lib/modulues/2.2.17-0.24.mdk/modules.dep
along with messages that modprobe can't find various modules like:
char-major-180, sound-slot-1G, and eth1.
If this has anything to do with it, I did install the hackkernel and the
secure kernel, but specified the default to be the plain linux-up kernel
instead of the secure kernel and I let it boot with the default. But some
of the first messages after boot make it seem like it is doing what it's
supposed to:
Symbols match kernel version 2.2.17
loaded 145 symbols from 4 modules
Linux version 2.2.17-0.24mdk
Hope this helps!
