Another possible bug, this one from the 7.1 release --- I have been tracking this since that release was a beta ;) Most users won't notice this, or maybe something went strange during my install, but I did install from scratch to a bare disk, so it is not the product of legacy code: smtpd is creating mail spool files which violate RFC 822 by escaping the "From" line in all message headers. Since Mandrake 7.1 sprang postfix on us unannounced, I spent a long time hunting the bug there, but it seems now that the only component left which could cause this is smtpd. What happens is all mail, as it is delivered to the mail spool files, has two headers added, the "X-From-Line:" and another bare "From username date" header(note: no colon after the From). The trouble is caused by smtpd 'escaping" the From to avoid confusing mbox-parsering software (who consider this line a record boundary) For example, = X-From-Line: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Sep 6 21:01:27 2000 = >From garym Wed Sep 6 21:01:27 2000 = Return-Path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> What happens is only apparently a problem for Emacs/Xemacs GNUS: When replying to any message, GNUS beeps a warning that this >From header violates RFC 822. You may want to check your /var/spool/mail files to see if this is a general problem with our smtpd and/or whether the problem persists in 7.2 --- if anyone has a fix for this, please let me know. -- Gary Lawrence Murphy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> TeleDynamics Communications Inc Business Innovations Through Open Source Systems: http://www.teledyn.com "Computers are useless.
