I only have 128Mb in my intel box, swapping does occur and I don't mind
that it does.

Remove some memory and try a bit harder? ;-)

Updating rpm's with autorpm seems to be quite destructive on my box...

Anyway, whatever happens, as long as there is swapspace available, the
kernel should not display those messages. Things will get slow, but
stuff shouldn't start crashing.

I admit that it's getting better (it used to lock my box solid) but it's
not entirely gone (yet).
