Continuous respawning is a usual problem on level 5, when X can't find
something and drops out. Naturally the scripts try to launch it again
and all this end in a loop. Probably, in your case, X respawns because
it can't find its "lovely" fixed font...

Some chances of what migh be wrong:
"clone-self = on" on /etc/X11/fs/config - some time ago I had this
problem with one X. Don't know exactly why but xfs broke. I had to put
it off.
/tmp permissions. They should be rwx for world and have the tidbit set
(look for "t" on the end of directory permissions). Besides it is
recomendable to delete /tmp/.font-unix directory before launching xfs.
Some time ago something went wrong with unix domain sockets. One very
early cooker had some serious trouble with programs creating such stuff.
If you noted xfs creates such a socket on Mandrake by default. Right now
I don't fully remember the package that was making the dirty trick... :(
Maybe you still have it?
