Something is wrong somewhere on your machine. Either permissions or some
old/conflicting libs or some weirdness on the configuration. On my
computer, all latest builds, 17th included, have xfs working without any
problems. Besides I have a relatively heavy font base ~300 fonts, 120 of
them TTF. They are heavily demanded on some programs. xfs deals with
this base without troubles and preformance problems.

There is a hint. If xfs doesn't log, that is probably due to the fact
that it can't access /tmp by some reason. Try to change the -1 port on
init script for a TCP one. Just as a test. If xfs will launch, then try
to check up you libs. A few monthes ago I had exactly this problem.
