I must admit I have not had the chance to try out the current Mandrake beta - am on holiday and bandwith, or rather the lack of it, is a major hindrance here; however, from observing Cooker through rpmfind.net I can summarize as thus:
  • No Kerberos integration - funny as Mandrake seems strong in security in other respects (e.g. security levels)
  • Some issues with library naming: in particular qt2-2.2.0. Since 7.2 will contain mostly qt 2.2 programs (e.g. KDE 2) cf. qt 1.x I have been expecting Mandrake to follow RH in packaging qt-2.2 and qt1-1.45, for instance. Or perhaps major renamings are left behind for 8.0?
  • Heard the installer has been improved. Hopefully display issues when using the VGA16 X Server (for the unfortunate few like me with odd video cards like my Permedia2 Diamond); when I install 7.1 I was struggling to select individual packages; in the end I gave up and chose a default install and tweaked it later.
  • The last item is perhaps more appropriate for the Helixcode team, but since Mandrake is using modified Helix packages perhaps it has some relevance: installing Helix on top of Mandrake 7.1 is a horrible affair; the unified menuing system broke and not only are the Helix packages not using the new menuing system (due to them catering for 7.0 too I believe) but subsequent Mandrake packages installed do not appear on the menu. Worse, the menu documentation seems to be lifted from Debian's.
  • Then again perhaps I should have just stuck to installing packages from Cooker; which should be easier now that they appear on Mandrake Update. Looking forward to using 7.2 soon.

    Cheers,

    Michel Salim
