Strange, nobody has reported such behaviour..

Try to upgrade ORBit, gtk+, XFree86 4.0.1 (which is much more stable
than XFree86 4.0)..

Could you try :
xinit /usr/bin/startgnome

Are you able to load kde ?

Try also to completely remove your .gnome* directory
