I installed Linux-Mandrake 7.2 beta 3 over FTP on my IBM ThinkPad laptop,
using the text installer. It worked the first time. However, I have some
questions and problems, not all of which are new in 7.2.
First, I still can't select exactly which packages to install from the
text-based installer. I would appreciate that, even if the packages
aren't separated into groups as they are in the graphical installer.
X doesn't work with my Neomagic 256AV card (at least it doesn't when I
have my full-sized monitor plugged into my laptop). When I tested it, the
monitor turned off for a few seconds, and then the display was dim for the
rest of the installation. But I guess that's a problem with the driver,
not the installer.
Is Emacs installed automatically in the "Recommended" installation
class? It wasn't installed in my custom installation, though it was easy
for me to install it myself with urpmi.
I notice that the /etc/profile.d/lang.csh script runs the consoletype
program, which is located in /sbin so that it's not in a regular user's
PATH.
When I boot, kudzu tells me that my sound card (an ESS AudioDrive
Solo-1) has been removed and asks me whether I should remove the
configuration or keep it. If I choose to keep it, the sound card works.
I noticed that to run esd, the user has to be in the audio group, while
that is not required to access the sound device in general. Why is the
use of esd restricted in this way?
Finally, I noticed that the mailcap package isn't installed; at least it
wasn't in my custom installation (and I couldn't select individual
packages). Is it supposed to be installed in the
"Recommended" installation class? If not, how do applications such as Web
browsers, file managers, and email clients associate helper apps with file
types?
Thank you.
