Hello all.

I am running hackkernel-2.4.0-0.28mdk, using the ALSA drivers, with the
OSS shims (~blech~) and esound-0.2.19-7mdk. I have the following
modules loaded:

snd-pcm-oss 18512 0
snd-mixer-oss 5216 1 [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-pcm-plugin 15248 0 [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-card-sbawe 5632 3
snd-mpu401-uart 3168 0 [snd-card-sbawe]
snd-rawmidi 10848 0 [snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-seq-device 3920 0 [snd-card-sbawe snd-rawmidi]
snd-sb16-csp 16128 0 [snd-card-sbawe]
snd-sb16-dsp 17904 0 [snd-card-sbawe snd-sb16-csp]
snd-pcm 34144 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm-plugin snd-sb16-dsp]
snd-mixer 25264 2 [snd-mixer-oss snd-sb16-csp snd-sb16-dsp]
snd-opl3 5232 0 [snd-card-sbawe]
snd-timer 9440 0 [snd-pcm snd-opl3]
snd-hwdep 3504 0 [snd-sb16-csp snd-opl3]
snd 38576 1 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-plugin
snd-card-sbawe snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-sb16-csp snd-sb16-dsp
snd-pcm snd-mixer snd-opl3 snd-timer snd-hwdep]
soundcore 4464 5 [snd]

Whenever I play any audio through esound it comes out but it clicks and
pops. If I revert the tool (xmms, mgp123, ogg123) to using OSS or ALSA
directly the clicks and pops go away.

Any ideas why this is?

Also, some of the sound tools do not seem to be ALSA aware and do need
the OSS ALSA shims. Any chance of getting tools like the mixer_applet
and esd to be ALSA aware? A runtime check of /proc/asound should be all
that is needed to determine whether to use the ALSA interfaces or the OSS
interfaces.

Lastly, a sidebar question: Any idea why the mail-archive archive of
this list is consistantly 4 days behind the postings? It makes it very
difficult to follow the list when everything is 4 days old.

b.
