Ok I've managed to get sound going in kde using the modification to the
startkde file:

New information since then
:
A reminder that i'm using the via82cxxx ac97 audio chip on board and
kcontrol fails to give any information under the "information -> sound"
entry since the install has changed from alsa to oss/lite drivers. Sound
works in other x-apps if the artsd is disabled - but the sound is played too
fast; it is played as though it is 44100 sample rates through a 48000
playback. This occurs with virtually all apps. Artsd also makes the same
mistake but if I start it manually with the -s 48000 option it works at the
correct rate. Artsd however will only play about five sounds, using as much
cpu time as it can for about thirty seconds and then fails to produce any
further sound and no more cpu time either (this is regardless of whether it
starts automatically or if I start it manually). I suspect there is some
problem with the generic oss/lite drivers for this card and still wonder if
alsa shouldn't be used by default for it.

Thanks,
Con.
