X is failing. Start in single-user mode (with LILO, say "linux init=/bin/bash")
and edit /etc/inittab; change the default runlevel (first entry) from 5 to 3.
Then say "init 3" or restart to bring up more services, mount stuff etc, and
then use the text tools to reconfigure X. You can get the X server to write a
log (look in /var/log/ for anything obvious, it may do so by default) which will
help you to discover what's wrong. Your laptop may have an unsupported video
chipset, or you may be trying to use a resolution or colour depth not supported
by one of the chip, driver or screen hardware.
