Ok I've managed to find a way for sound to work properly, the kcontrol
information to be correct and the arts daemon to not conflict with the via
82cxxx ac97 sound card. Please do this by default for any installation as
sound will never work properly on this card otherwise.
Install alsa instead of the oss/lite modules
edit the modules.conf file correctly

alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
then start the arts daemon (artsd) with the -r 48000 option to reflect the
proper sample rate playback.
If you don't want to include the alsa drivers by default then even with the
-r 48000 option the arts daemon will fail. The other problems will be that
all x-apps and the esd will playback sounds at higher pitch (44100 sample
rates played at 48000) and kcontrol will not be able to recognise the sound
information. Sound will only work sporadically.
Please do this by default on installation as there are many of these
motherboards around now.
