Here you are locking the sample rate at a particular rate, instead of
making use of the hardware's native ability to support variable PCM
rates.  Doing this immediately puts more load on your CPU for many
tasks, because sounds which are natively at 44.1Khz or lower must how be
up-sampled in software.

Please don't.  You are hiding the problem, not solving it.  Let's find
the real problem(s) here...
