Be sure to uncheck the box that says "Hard Disk Optimizations" or so at
one of the installation screens. This happened to me before.

If you want your hard disk as fast as it can be driven, recompile the
kernel after installation (if you have a really new ATA/66 or 100
controller chipset, patch your kernel first with ide-patch) enabling DMA
and other PCI details.
