Don't know the problem. The same thing happen on my test machine with
the SB32 AWE.

I deleted the /etc/isapnp.conf file, removed all references to the sound
in the /etc/modules.conf then did a depmod -ae. Rebooted the machine
with linux 3 and as root ran sndconfig. The card was recognized and
correct setup the new isapnp.conf and entries in the modules.conf.

Now the system sound is correct, even after several test reboots.
