There are never little releases.  I've done too many software releases. 
You want a long cycle.  As large as this product is, doing short release
cycles, would be a killer for all involved.  Get a good base and patch
as needed.  I've found that typically what comes with the Mandrake
releases is pretty good and I just keep up with the patches that are
issued.   I'm sure Mandrake will update things such as KDE and other
items as things are fixed up.

After trying an upgrade install once a long time ago I just gun the man
install directories, saving the things I really want ( update
configurations ) and making sure the os independent items are on
different partitions.  I just don't care for upgrade installs.  You
typically end up with a system that is not as it's creators intended.  (
Try doing a Win98 -> Win2000 upgrade, ick, tried that once, never
again.)
