yes, it's slower to load comparing with KDE1, but not dramatically slower.
may be, 30%-40%. Well, it's a lot, but may be can be enhanced in following
versions, KDE 2.1/3.0
IMHO, it was very important to get KDE 2.0 out, as it is MAJOR upgrade to
KDE1/generic X-Windows.

kde1-compat RPMs. Look on LM 7.2 release

Just imagine upgrading from Win 3.1 to Win 95. None of applications from
Win16/3.1 were working correctly under Win95.
You need KDE2-native applications to get KDE2 functionality.

| This is a major problem, for me at least. Linux-Mandrake 7.2 with KDE 2.0
| is much, much slower to respond.

Is Konqueror slower then Netscape?.. Is Kwrite/Kword slow to work/to start
for you?
In this case, pls check what version of your packages are. may be they are
just _too old_ . Try to upgrade to current CVS tree (KDE 2.0.1 development
version)

| Linux-Mandrake 7.2 from downloaded ISO's
| AMD K6 -333
| 192 megs of PC-100 memoy
| 32 gig HD
| ATA-66 EIDE HD

This should be more-less ok.
Do you have K6 or K6-2?
K6 is more like a Pentium, and rather old. Probably you can upgrade to K6-2
at very reasonable price. May be, $20-$30, as K6-2 is also obsolete.

Couple of questions more. XFree version? Video card, bus (PCI, AGP)?

| I will understand if you do not choose to answer.

well, I haven't seen your question on kde-user.
I regulary look through this list and answer questions where can help.
Especialy Mandrake-specific...
