Take II: about half the S3 Virge cards I install onto (DX or GX) are broken
under XFree86 4.0.1 (from 7.2rc1 ISO) but worked fine under 4.0 - the symptom is
a black screen after switching to graphics mode. Happens on both 4MB and 8MB PCI
cards. Simply replacing the card with an identical one will sometimes fix the
problem.
There is no S4 (Savage) driver under XFree86 4.0* at all.
The XFree86 4.0.1 Sis-6326 driver seems to be much more broken in 24-bit mode
than 16-bit mode (more display artefacts and higher chance of just plain
freezing up). The XFree SiS drivers have never been fantastic. Actually, the SiS
cards have never been fantastic either, and the versions built into motherboards
(and sharing main RAM) seriously suck performance-wise, especially at high res.
