Has anyone on the list been successful in getting any USB ethernet
adapters to work? I visited Donald Becker's USB Ethernet page and from
the looks of everything there, USB ethernet should be working with no
problems...

So, being anxious to get some use out of my WebSurfer pro doorstop, I
ran out to Fry's and got a Linksys USB100TX (a 10/100 USB Ethernet
device about the size of a pack of smokes) and grabbed a copy of
Mandrake 7.2.

After I performed the gymnastics of getting Mandrake installed (the
websurfer pro has no floppy or cd-rom). I first tried to load the usb
core after the first boot. I tried insmod usb-ohci. I got a screen full
of unresolved symbols? Huh? How do I get unresolved symbols on a fresh
install? Anyway,.. not the point here.

I swiftly moved into the /usr/src/linux directory and did all the right
things. I compiled a new kernel and put it into place,.. along with all
the modules freshly compiled and put in place. Now when I do an insmod
usb-ohci, I get a screen of what looks like a succesful load,.. with all
sorts of official looking technical data about my USB bus. Then,.. I do
what I think I'm supposed to do which is insmod pegasus,.. which also
seems to work OK as the light on my USB adapter does light up. I even
did an ifconfig eth0 to see if the kernel sees a ethernet adpater
attached. All success.

However,.. things start to go wrong once I try to bring the ethernet
interface up. I got the oh so useful error message:

pegasus.c: party FAIL ffff

I have no idea what it means but maybe someone here does.

Let me know if you have any relevant experience here. I would sure
appreciate it.

Thanks, Aaron Newsome
