Hey CM, These are all cursory observations running as root. No program was looked at in depth. If the text looks messed up, it is because I used kjots to make notes and the font is so tiny I couldn't read it very good. I'm a lousy typist and it does not 'wrap'. klyx will not display LaTex docs; shows only a black background in the display window. No error = just black hole space. Also, klyx will not open *.tex docs that are LaTex files. NOTE that lyx will display the same docs ok. While using koffice workspace I opened kword-publish, kword-letter, and kspread. I selected view/close all and it crashed with sig 6 = aborted.. irepeated it - it crashed again. kpresenter & kspread do the same thing if you 'close all views'. kword crashes too that way but claims it is 'invalid memory reference'. Quanta runs. Some of the drop down menu icons were missing - blackholes in their place if the selection is not available. That's sort of odd - 'greyed out' is the norm. Maybe that's because it is not updated yet. kafka runs but takes FOREVER to open a large html page(>500kb). I killed it after 2 or 3 minutes cause it would not interrupt the 'opening file' with close or quit from the menu. I tried it again with only a 9k file - still would not open it and still would not allow interrupt. Had to kill it again. The filter is "Web Pages". I suppose that means it don't work. (NOTE:Quanta opened the same files in ~10 secs.) kfontsel runs. That's the smallest text (avgWdth) I have ever read on a screen(1280x1024); one column from the top to the bottom of the screen. Bluefish won't run anymore as root from the menu. I have to run it from the cli with -s to override the ?security check. The menu system doesn't allow me to update the command. Well, actually it allows it but it is not activated in the menu. Kisdn runs and knew I did not have isdn. Kinda weird that it is on the menu.???smh??? Same for kimon. kppp logview runs but NEVER displays any logs. LynX won't run anymore(not that I would want to use it). Opens and closes with the single line "Badly formed address." SayWhat? I did not give it an address. I dunno if KWinTV is suppose to open and close but it does. How rude!:=) Seems like it should at least say why it's not gonig to run. telnet did the same thing. ksnapshot only saves files as png format? When changing the skin on Kaiman(KDE Media player), it crashed (SIG11) when I selected 'OK' after selecting apply It does the same thing if just 'OK' is selected. Note:applies to any of the non-default skins. K9 looks pretty nice. Too bad I can't use it. The thud 'Help' is pointing to the wrong location. It s/b : /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/thud/thud.html but it is pointing to /usr/share/doc/kde1/HTML/default/thud/thud.html . Or, maybe, the doc is in the wrong place???. kmag has the same problem as thud. Help points to the wrong location or the doc is in the wrong spot. kmag is worthless and should not even be in the menu or the disk. xmag is better but not much. This is a real shame. Some people really need the magnifiers. If I keep reading this tiny text, I will too. I'm not sure I know the point of having K File System Control but if a device has a long path, the " Mounted on: " description gets cut off. If kpackage manager is run in Gnome, it won't load the base information; Reload has no effect. You have to load a previous package, and cancel the installation. It is trying to get %u but it can't get it and craps out with 'I don't know where I am going'. Maybe %u should not be so hard to find. I did not notice this occuring before the updates were installed. Kups Admin won't run anymore. It use to. It did not help get the printer working, but it did run. Now it don't. -Scratch that; it just popped up - 10 minutes after selecting it!?! It does not work, tho. None of the selector(menus, etc) are available and usable. I had to kill it. Kupsdonf doesn't run either. They both try to start but never get the windows open. -Wrong again. It too pooped up and it's usable . But when I change the variables and select "Ok', the button depresses and it just stays that way. I had to kill it. QT-CUPS doesn't do anything anymore; does not even appear that it is trying to start...it's been over an hour - I don't think it will start. *Note that I have upgraded the CUPS to the latest 7.2 Updates versions. Still, they did work before. KDE Control Center 'borders' is no longer available in its assigned location of Look&Feel/Borders. ditto for the 'font manager'. cooledit wants to mail a message to count the number of cooledit users???smh??? octave now just opens a terminal and immediately closes it. It can be run via the cli command octave in an open terminal. kpackage was doing some weird stuff too: It refused to recognize that there were newer packages on your ftp site(the 2 you posted yesterday). I dunno why. Also, all the 'devel' packages are going into the KDE graphical desktop but s/b in Development/Kde & QT, right? All of my KDE windows have lost their memory. They never open in the last spot and never remember the last size. Here's one I have noticed for several programs and it just occurred in kjots: when trying to save a file, I get a ' Knotify ' alert that there is 'no matching item' - for EVERY letter I type for the name of the 'save as' doc. This is a bug I did not see before the updates. In general, many programs seem to fail to realize that there are many files worth opening that are in 'hidden' directories and they will not display them. That's weird. Open source software that hides files from itself.???smh??? You can get them; it's just a pain. AND, finally, XEARTH DOES NOT RUN ANYMORE! Well, that is not exactly true. it runs(there are processes for each attempt) but I can't see the Earth anymore.:-( I tried several ways to get it run and show itself but nothing worked.:-( My sys is dual 450MHz PIII w/256MB RAM, SCSI & ATA33 drives. Running LM7.2 Developer (+kitchen sink) since Nov 1; fresh install on one-half of 20GB drive. Only changes have been the updates for CUPS and removal of the pilot-files(installed by default). Oh yea, I have Netscape6 running too. I think that I should say that many programs look just fine and some run better. The ones above had some odd things occurring, imo. The updates really did help kill some of the bugs - thanx for making the packages. HTH to kill some more.
