ls -l /etc/X11/X

if it points to XFree, you're running 4.something; if it points to
XF86_something (often XF86_SVGA), you're running 3.3.x. If 4.*, you can look in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log for all the cory detail.

Try them and see. Also read /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.nameofcard (the path
may not be quite right, but I'm sure of the first 4 elements) to see what
options there are, and try some of them out.
