Hiya,
 Was it maybe that the module usb-uhci and usbcore not loaded? Hmm..
have you tried running "/etc/rc.d/init.d/usb start" as root user and try
command "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" and then trying cups?

 Also, which version of the kernel are you using? 2.4.0-7 ?
