I think OS probably means updatedb, not slocate.   You can reduce the
time it takes by not leaving things mounted.   You can select the
time of day to run it in cron or anacron, conventionally 4:02 am if
the PC is powered up, otherwise when it is switched on next after
4:02 am.

I have not noticed any significant slowdown, even on this 300MHz
Pentium, working while updatedb is running.
