I did another fresh install last night and did not have the problem.  Apparently whatever the problem was has been fixed.  It did still say two of the partitions had not been unmounted cleanly and fsck'd them, but they came up o.k. after the fsck.  The partitions that are not getting unmounted cleanly are the ones I chose not to format during the installation (the cooker mirror & home directories partitions).  It appears if you choose to format the partitions they get unmounted cleanly.

Unable to reproduce. Just did a hd install on another disk, partition was
cleanly unmounted and contained the same information after reboot.
