Please give a look to my previous requests "RPM 3.05 Upgrading (I II III)`
I succeeded in upgrading to RPM 4.0.x thanks to those suggestions.
Most of the problems you have are due to installed packages that call for
older library versions. To avoid a lot of messages of the type "lib xxx is
needed by package yyy" I have found better to make a side installation
of Mandrake 7.2 (Never tried it with 7.0) keeping the package number as
low as possible (a default minimal installation is OK) and then upgrading
as described in the messages above. I have yet some problem with kpackage
and Drake Package manager so I have posted a last request today that I hope
will be replied soon. I plan then to write back a detailed summing up report
with all the necessary tricks. Don't try to simply upgrade your running
system: you will be messed up by a lot of libraries needed by the packages
you installed. Starting instead with a minimal system will allow you to
directly install the newer versions of what you need after having installed
RPM 4.0x
