I'm running with LM-7.2, RPM 4.0, gcc-2.96, glibc-2.2.1, kernel-2.4.0-5mdk
Those have been my steps:

ALL FROM SOURCES (.src.rpm)

1) Install rpm-4
2) rpm --rebuilddb
3) install BINUTILS & LIBBINUTILS!!! (IMPORTANT)
3) Install gcc/glibc
4) install 2.4.0
use -Uvh for sources, headers, docs and utils
use -ivh for kernel-2.4.0 or kernel-smp-2.4.0 BE CAREFUL!!

4.5) Cross your finger!
5) Restart the system

If u need, I compiled all these RPM on my new dual-precessor (yes guys... and
thanks to Mandrake it has never seen Window$!), so I could even put it on my
ftp share on monday... they're compiled for i686 anyway, about 80 MB I
guess...
Have a nice work.
Btw, I had to add these lines in /etc/rc.d/rc.local to make my ppp connection
working:

/sbin/modprobe -v ppp_generic
/sbin/modprobe -v ppp_deflate
/sbin/modprobe -v ppp_async

And, much important... IT DOES NOT SUPPORT REISER FS...
