Thanks, Daniel, I got buffer from there too.  It all works very nicely now.  
I was beginning to think that there wasn't a worthwhile backup program in the 
distribution, so I started looking at the commercial solutions.  BRU was the 
best I found but I didn't like its proprietary format.

Flexbackup is simple and powerful - the only thing it lacks is a gui.  KDat 
has a very simple gui but I haven't got it working in the two years I've been 
using KDE.
