ok, I upgraded mktemp and it gets part that point now. But, now I get
this:

# mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.1-8mdksmp 2.4.1-8mdksmp
mke2fs 1.19, 13-Jul-2000 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
tar: ./lib/reiserfs.o: Wrote only 4096 of 10240 bytes
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

All of my filesystems are reiser and the mkinitrd worked fine for pre
2.4.1 kernels
