I got ahold of some CDRs with the new cooker ISOs and installed.

I posted my experiences with it on the newsgroup alt.os.linux.mandrake and
it was suggested i mail it here incase it's of any use to the developers.

So here's a copy of my experiences, hope it'll prove useful.

Ok.

Got my discs for this from http://www.linux123.co.uk this morning.

Installation
------------

The graphical installation utility is top-notch as always. It's a lot
more logical than the version in 7.2.

Pretty much all the packages you could need are there, and all the ones
I checked were the very latest versions.

Installation itself was pretty pain free. It hung at the printer setup
stage and I had to start again, but other than that there wasn't any
problems.

A nice addition to the installation is the ability to setup the mouse
there.

It picked up my USB optical Intellimouse straight away, and allowed the
use of the scroll wheel during installation.

This nice feature is let down by the fact that it doesn't set X up to
use the mouse properly (kind of negating the use for it during
installation).

Post Install
------------

The install didn't setup the mouse, so it was unusable upon booting into
Linux.

I logged in and edited the file manually using several different setups
(as detailed in the XFree86 docs, one example for my exact mouse) but it
still wouldn't work, leading me to believe something more essential
wasn't set up during installation.

In the end I had to attach it to the PS/2 socket using the adapter,
which then worked fine.

KDE2.1beta is a bit nicer than 2.0. Things seem to run a tad faster,
but other than that I couldn't see too many changes.

One thing that seems to be missing is the ability to set the background.
The themes manager from 1.2 is back, but an independent background
doesn't seem to be available. An option for it exists on the right
click on the desktop, but it doesn't work.

PPP hadn't been installed, so I couldn't connect to the 'net and test
out the newer Konqueror but it looks promising.

All in all it looks to be the best Mandrake yet, and for a Beta is
remarkable bug free.

If they can work out the few bugs I've seen they're definitely onto a
winner.
