That depends. With the XFree86 3.x they used the 32 bpp nomenclature and
then netscape and word perfect would not render correctly in 8 or 24 bpp.
With XFree86 4.x they use a different classification - The 32 bpp (bits per
pixel) is replaced with 24 bpp but is something like 24 bits per pixel in
packed pixel mode or the equivalent of the old 32 bpp. So both word perfect
and netscape work fine with 4.x at 24bpp.

Which brings me to my next question. When will mandrake install choose 4.x
instead of 3.x for my S3 Trio3d video card. I have installed 4.x manually
but I have a time getting the fonts correctly after the upgrade. I can't use
the screen resolution or graphics configuration in DrakConf or it switches me
to 3.x again and resets my edited monitor settings in XF86Config to the lower
install settings. It sure would be nice to see this problem fixed in LM 8.0 .
