Hi all.
I installed (two days ago) LM beta 8.0 from provided ISO's.
It looks pretty clean, I was impressed by the overall look and feel. Even
though my fonts in Konq are messed up when viewing text files (maybe that's
the antialiasing everyone has talked about.)They look fine in GNOME,
however, which is too bad, because KDE is my preferred desktop.
At any rate, XFree86 4.02 (AND 4.01 AND 4.0) do NOT like the venerable
Mach32 by ATI. The Xserver dies when I try to 'test' it and it just lists my
options I picked and 'try some different parameters.' I went to X 3.3.6
(THANK YOU for putting it in the options) and X fires up fine.
It's a shame thught that I cannot get these strange birds together. However,
I partially blame my Gateway CrystalScan 1024NI monitor, which has a grand
refresh rate of 31.5-38 horiz. and 50-70 vertical. (Be nice to see that
monitor's model in the Final 8.0)
Maybe one of you out there in Linux Land can find one of these old cards
(pci of course) and give it a whirl. XFree86 4(.0,.1,.2) is also notoriously
bad with Trident cards, notably the TGUI99 series. Yah, it's a crappy 2 meg
card (as is my Mach32) but in windows it can easily pull off 800x600x16bits.
One of my friends even pulled Mandrake 7.2 off his system to put in RedHat
5.2 :P
He claimed, "See? This one works RIGHT!"
Of course, the next day, he was stricken with the Ramen Worm.
*evil cackle*

Also, My ESS Solo-1 Audiodrive sound card DOES NOT WORK. I have tried
loading the snd-card-es1938.o AND 1968.o until I am blue in the face. It
just claims that *no such device present*. However, it WILL load the
snd-es1938.o module just fine (which I am pretty sure that is the correct
module.) If anyone has some suggestions, I'd be appreciative. I would like
to hear sound while I play Heretic II.

Also, on a finicky note, who removed pico??
*Ravenhall waits for you all to stop laughing*
Yah, I know VIm,Emacs rah rah. But why remove a
quick-and-simple-screw-fancy-key-combinations editor like pico.
Thankfully, I did slocate pico and found Jpico, which is a decent
replacement. Praise be to Joe.
I also second (or third or fourth, et. al.) the anti-aliasing fonts in KDE
OPTION. It looks like crud on my machine. 'Nuff said.
