Hello,

  Ok tried the install again.

Still can't log in as root from the login prompt. I have to log in
as a normal user and then su - to get root access. Also there is a
MOTD coming up now when logging in as a normal message.

Had to disable cups and during boot the system locks hard when it
tries to start it. It also leave garbage in the boot.log and
  messages log files.

Still getting the kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno
= 2

I am now getting a fail on boot with this message:
"Building Window Manager Session Can't write to
  /etc/X11/gdm/Session/KDE"
  or
"Building Window Manager Session Can't write to
  /etc/X11/gdm/Session/GNOME"
  or
"Building Window Manager Session Can't write to
  /etc/X11/gdm/Session/BlackBox"
There doesn't seem to be any pattern as to which comes up.
