Right. OTOH that would be inconsistant with all the other distros and the
various HOWTOs for making antialiasing work.
I actually like the idea of having the distribution defaults in /usr,
local settings in /etc and user settings in ~ and that is not too
uncommon either.

Not really. I'm actually studying in Espoo near Helsinki, but my
university (no, not the HUT) only has PCs, so I am still using my old 
mail account. I'm also still a sort-of member of LUGO.
