As I still can't get into cooker, I rebuilt my kernels in 7.2 with 
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_OFFBOARD set, ran lilo and rebooted.

Result: kernel panic - can't find root partition.  I now have to append  
"ide0=0xd400,0xd802 ide1=0xdc00,0xe002 " to lilo [kernels used are 
2.4.2-18mdk ( rebuilt for 7.2 ) and 2.2.17-27mdk].

This is a nuisance.  Surely it would be better to unset this config flag.
