Hey guys,
Is it really necessary to have /etc/passwd and /etc/group in RPMs? I
can't possibly think of a install of Mandrake that would retain the
initial copies of these files past about an hour, so updates just leave
a bunch of *.rpmnew files lying around. Would it not be better to create
the users during the pre-install phase of an RPM? If the user exists,
then it will simply not create it.
On the topic of /etc/passwd and friends, why would setup have users such
as postgres if postgresql is not installed? As with above, the
pre-install of postgresql should create it and the uninstall should
remove it. This is an example, there are others where this applies as
well.
Thoughts?
